Ways to Prepare for the New Year

Not only are we starting a new year, but we’re also getting ready to embark on a whole new decade! I still remember all the commotion over Y2K. With 2020 being around the corner it really puts things into perspective. That seems like forever ago, but one thing that never changes is the desire to start fresh in January. Whether you’re sick of it or not, get ready for the “New Year, New Me” memes.

People hate them but there’s nothing wrong with being “new.” If you’re the same person you were a few years ago, what have you been doing? Wasting your time.

When a year comes to a close, I take time to think about what went well and what wasn’t all that. I love setting professional and personal goals for myself. It keeps me motivated and helps me to focus. Here are some tips on how to set your own goals for 2020.

Don’t Put Much Pressure On Yourself

Once the holidays roll in, you start to think about where you’ve been, where you’re going, and where you want to go. Beginning a new year is a new opportunity to start fresh. Don’t stress about what you want and how you’ll feel if you don’t get it. Just live and do the best you can.

Edit Your Goals All Year

When I first started making resolutions, I hoped to successfully keep them through the end of the year. Have I done that? Nope. But I tried. Setting daily, weekly, and monthly goals works a lot better. We’re human! We make mistakes. It’s a lot easier to make a short term goal and see it through than to set a goal for the whole year! 365 days is a long time to give up sweets. It’s just not happening. And I’m not going to lie to myself and pretend that it will.

Do What Makes You Happy

We all have hobbies. I love painting and writing. I get a creative rush when I pick up a paintbrush or a pen. What’s your hobby? Do it! Start out by setting a small goal for yourself. Sign up for a dance class on the weekends. Go golfing once a month. Make a trip to a new city twice a year. Whatever it is that makes you happy, make time for it. You’ll be glad that you did.

Consistently Work on Your Self-Esteem

Learn to love yourself. Every freckle, every mole, your personality, your voice, it all makes you, YOU. Don’t let a stranger, a bad relationship or a friend who’s not really your friend, tear you down and make you feel less than you are. Make a point to work on yourself as much as possible. Whether it’s eating healthy and exercising, taking time out to pamper yourself or using a PTO day to relax, take care of yourself. You deserve it.

Best wishes to you in the new year!

P.S. I used all Issa Rae gifs because I’m still sad we didn’t get a new season of Insecure this year. Looking forward to the new season. And don’t get me started on Atlanta!
